I’ve been piping hot about this before and wanted to get this off my chest yet again. Why are supposed educated people the first ones to be bigots on the “DL” (downlow) and the more blue collar of us just bigots straight-up? There are three things that have me thinking of all the “DL” racism that is more than rampant around these days. Of course the presidential election has some major undertones of racisim anywhere you look. The other day I heard on the news this guy say something that no one challenged and I was floored: “Hillary [Clinton} just appeals to people in my type of community.” We all know what he’s talking about, the “white” community, but no one called him out. If a black person said that we would all now they were talking about that and they would have been called out for it. Everyone is so careful to hide their racism and keep it on the DL but then it seems so much more sinister when we detect it for what it really is. Mind you it doesn’t make me feel any better when it is plopped right down in front of me either, but at least I know where I stand and we both don’t have to play that “enlightenment” game. You know the one wherein you don’t really see my black ass standing right in front of you, that you just see a person… We’re not enlightened at all! In fact I think we’re turning the clock back slowly on race relations. The second thing that has me hot is when did “Latins” become close to white and more acceptable to whites? I see lots of personal ads (see third thing that’s got me hot below about CraigsList) all over the place about whites who are into whites/Latins. Mind you if you’re talking Spanish that’s one this [as in Spanish from Spain], who are generally white. But for most of the people in southern California when they say Latin they mean from Latin America…more to the point because of proximity…Mexico. And in my estimation most Mexicans are closer to black than most whiltes — or even they — will admit. Yes, they have origins from the Spanish [from Spain] but that has been diluted with plenty of native South American blood as well as African. Don’t get it twisted – from one blood comes all nation. The last thing that has me hot is the racism is online postings like on CraigsList. The racism tone in some ads scream Wake up world, I’m crazy!!! of the poster, but they also scream Wake up world, WE’RE all crazy!!!. CraigsList is screwed up in another respect as well. If you didn’t know CraigsList allows users to “flag” other people’s posts for removal. CraigsList says that one flag doesn’t do it, so many people have to flag something to get it removed auto-magically by the server. So I’ve done quite a few tests on this. I posted nearly identical ads around the same time and changed the content a little in the following respect – one posting from a white dude and the other from me — the black dude. In the 20/20 style from the days of old when they took two people of EXACT educational, work and other background except one was white and one was black. They aired results of their examination and most of the time of the two job candidates, the white dude came up with the job. Well in my examination most of the time the black dude’s positing was removed through flagging while the white dude’s stayed up and received responses. (Don’t even get me started on the lack of responses from my posting compared to the number received by the white dude’s. Truly night and day [no pun intended 😉 ].) So I just had to get that off my mind and hope it percolates into the universe’s consciousness. If it changes one person I will have done my job…
