Like everyone else I am increasingly more and more in awe of Google‘s technology portfolio. I remember trying Babelfish a few years back and though it did present a translation of what I pasted in the translate box it had limited implications – like when you need to ask “how do you say…?” in this or that language.
But I had a need to translate a website from German to English and remembered Google’s translate feature. It does much more than Babelfish’s paste a word/phrase -> translate thing. I pasted the URL of the webpage and clicked the link on the other side. Impressively the page opened in English – even some of the pieces in a composite graphic were now in English. Of course a website that has metadata for changing the language is optimum, but in this case there was no English version of the website.
Google is clearly one of the leaders in the tech space and I hope they continue using their superhero powers for good and not evil.
