After all these years I have been dismissing stupid people thinking ‘The elevator isn’t going all the way to the top’ I just thought of something new.
The elevator goes all the way to the top but it isn’t big enough to hold all the necessary information. Like everyone I encounter dumb people – the kind of ‘There’s no elevator at all!’ types. But with the new realization it is now possible to understand the other type of people who are not dumb just doing dumb things. Case in point: a co- worker who gets the reason to do a particular thing but just doesn’t do it. Previously I thought it was stupidity but of late I have come to the new belief that it is not stupidity just carelessness. In essence the elevator took the information all the way to the top but left some of the important bits out – like the ones that something has to happen and that THEY were the ones to do it.
Evidenced by all the time someone will be aloof to the fact that it is their job to do the task until someone says ‘Bob, when will you have that done?’ and Bob (with a new elevator’s worth of information having just reached the top floor) suddenly is all like “Right on that, boss…” with new-found excitement, renewed vigor and all. It having escaped him (but no one else) that it was his to do all along.
Why is the project beyond schedule and over-budget? Look to all the people who are waiting/have been waiting/will always wait on someone else to TELL them: “Go forth and push the button.”
